LUCKY'S JOURNAL
BEFORE THE WEDDING
The morning was bright and beautiful, a few soft white clouds drifted lazily across the sky. The birds who had built a nest in the old flowering bush beside the front stoop were singing their joyful songs of peace when suddenly the sounds of two human voices were heard, escalating in both pitch and volume as they neared the house. "Will not", said one, "Will to," shouted the other, "Will not", yelled the first, "Will to", shrieked the second.
The door opened suddenly, and Mom was there taking in the whole scene. "That will be enough of that. Is this the cravat thing still going on? You two get in here, NOW!"
Naturally I followed along, curious to see what would happen.
"I'm glad you both came by this morning, although we could have done with out such a loud entrance. With all the Wedding preparations I was hoping we could find a few minutes to talk. Come with me."
Mom led the two down the hall to her room and took a large wooden box down from the top of the linen press. Sitting down on the edge of the bed, she opened the box and began removing things. "First for you Kel, I have these". She handed Kel a small box. For the first time in I don't know how long Kel was speechless as she looked in the box. She held the contents of the box up and as they caught the morning light from the window, we all caught our breath. The small blue gems in the earrings seemed to burn with a blue fire that reflected in the snowy pearls which formed the center of each piece. " They belonged to my mother, so they are quite old and probably out of style, but they will serve for 'something old and something blue' ," Mom said quietly.
"And for you, ax, a possible solution to that argument I heard as you two we coming up the walk". Mom again reached into the big box and produced another box a bit larger that the one she had given Kel.
"What is it, and how did you come by it?" ax asked, looking into the box. He lifted out a rectangular thing about the size of my ear flap. It was made of silvery metal with a large black stone centerd in the rectangle.
"A brooch, I guess,I don't know the proper name for it," Mom said laughing, "It belonged to a good friend of mine and he used it to close the top of his shirt on formal occasions. He hated ties, too. I think he would be very pleased to see it used for that purpose again."
"It has something carved on the stone but it isn't any language I ever saw before and I never saw a jewel quite like this either", ax remarked, as he looked closer at the central stone.
"The stone is called Black Onyx. My friend said people find them in caves where he came from. They are supposed to bring the wearer good luck and long life. That's what those markings carved on it say. To bad it didn't work for him, but that's another story." Mom concluded.
"Now I know you both have lots to do so I won't keep you", Mom said as she got up and set the box in its customary spot. The three of them quietly filed out of the room, each deep in thought.
"About what? Well how would I know, I'm just a dog, after all."
